Consultant / Project Manager / Senior Engineer in Clean Energy

Responsible for consulting and project management (on full time or voluntary basis) on clean energy, carbon emissions, environmental performance and sustainable manufacturing for various enterprises.

 

  • Technical management of deliverables improvements for development, design and construction of their modular hydroelectric installations (10 kW and above; with proprietary magnetic gearbox hardware) and future R&D programs for a startup.
  1. Improvements to datasheets, drawings, specifications and bill of materials (BOM).
  2. Coordination with existing suppliers / sub-contractors and proposing new suppliers in order to update detailed drawings, BOM and other technical deliverables.
  3. Advising on data, document transfer and information sharing improvements between internal team and suppliers during construction and testing.
  4. Building internal information and quality management systems.

 

 

 

  • Led a design study on energy optimization of a combined heat & power plant for a $250M residential / film studio (Pinewood Studios) and a $380M, 150MW biomass power plant for a utility, E.ON. Advised manufacturers on operational and compliance improvements for safer construction material manufacturing for a municipal project (associated with the London 2012 Olympics) in east London, U.K. (at Arup).

 

 

 

 

 

  • Led a site survey for a pico-hydropower pilot project, product development and testing of various biodigesters, and research on cook stove designs in Haiti (at AIDG).
  • Performed research and produced a publication on the socio-economics of solar energy in Kenya (at HEDON).
  • Steered technical input to business plan for a 900kW hydropower project in Nepal and also various market and technology research projects in energy, particularly in Uganda (at LEN).
  • Advised clients on best practice in planning offshore manufacturing and construction projects, on challenges facing the procurement of machinery for EPC projects and on value chain improvements on EPC projects (at AGI).

 

 

 

  • Project engineer on the Viridor CNIM Beddington Waste-to-Energy and Hofor BIO4 Biomass CHP Power Generation EPC Projects in the United Kingdom and Denmark respectively (at LAB / CNIM Group).
  • Managed specification, deliverables, technical evaluation of suppliers and purchase of full mechanical scope of equipment which included:
    • Rotating Equipment: Induced Draft Fans – Process Pumps – Residue Mechanical & Pneumatic Conveyor Systems.
    • Static Equipment: Flue Gas Stack – Bag House Filters – Residue and Reactant Silos – Heat Exchangers for Heat Recovery and District Heating – Ducting.
    • Valves and Piping.
    • Construction Sub-Contracting: Insulation, Heat Tracing, Erection.
    • Design Studies: Plant Layout Studies, Computational Fluid Dynamic Calculations, Structural Calculations.
  • Led technical coordination of internal design (process, civil, layout, piping, etc.) activities and supported client review of key project milestones.
  • Supported the project management and procurement team in commercial negotiations and risk management.
  • Supervised suppliers’ manufacturing scope, documentation, quality, inspections, testing, completion, delivery, and commissioning (within detailed engineering phase).

  • Coordinated a compressor study for selection and optimisation of revamped reciprocating compressors for the Taqa P15-D (Netherlands) and LAPS Offshore Modification (U.K.) Projects at KCI. Deepened expertise into package equipment on the Orange Nassau Q-15 Maas FEED and EPC Project (Netherlands), performing the technical evaluation of nitrogen and instrument air generation, dehydration and flare equipment suppliers. Also evaluated LNG, condensate and firewater storage tank suppliers. Supported the head of mechanical engineering in bids for new projects, project procedure development, client reviews and planning.
  • Managed the technical evaluation of ultrafiltration units, reverse osmosis units, electrical heaters and pedestal cranes on a tightly scheduled Total HHI Moho Nord Field Development FEED and pre-EPC Project at Doris Engineering. This included coordination of clarification meetings with suppliers on design, manufacturing, inspections, and compliance to Total GS specifications and industrial norms (mostly API, ASME and EN).
  • Clarified bids, short listed vendors, evaluated technical bids and provided technical basis for purchase on the Petrobras FLNG (Brazil) and Sonatrach Algiers Refinery (Algeria) pre-EPC projects at Technip. Expanded knowledge of rotating equipment (including heavy duty between-bearings centrifugal pumps, cryogenic pumps and turbo-expanders) on these projects. Advised suppliers on critical criteria in technical specification and project requirements.
  • Supervised electrochlorination unit suppliers by reviewing mechanical, structural and electrical drawings (including ATEX compliance), and detailed calculations and final documentation with support from relevant disciplines in the Technip package equipment department on the Dong Hejre Platform (Denmark) and Total Moho Nord Phase 1bis ALIMA Modification (Republic of Congo) EPC Projects. Made periodic visits to supplier factories to discuss project progress, technical issues, witness tests, coordinate equipment completion and pre-commissioning. On the Total project managed revamping activities, comprising of requisitions, technical evaluations and site surveys of a sulphate removal unit and several handling packages.

  • Managed the engineering, sourcing, supply, manufacture, assembly, testing, quality, scheduling (using Primavera) and cost control (using SAP) for a portfolio of electric motors (worth $3 million) for a range of clients such as pump manufacturers (Ebara, Sulzer, KSB), compressor manufacturers (GE, MHI), special equipment manufacturers (Air Liquide), and operators (ADCO, Anglogold).

  • Developed pump and blower technical specifications on the Conoco Phillips NMNG Gas FEED Project (Russia) at Worley Parsons. Performed feasibility studies for pumps and seawater desalination equipment on the Statoil Kårstø Asgard CO2 Removal Project, working with suppliers to establish budget pricing of equipment. Represented the chief engineer in estimating man-hour allocations, equipment scope and work duration for Mechanical activities for FEED project bids, and established equipment scope and duration of work execution, including presentations to the client.
  • Led pre-FEED responsibilities in development of gas compression options, equipment (pumps, compressors, air separation) sizing, and mechanical input to process and electrical studies on the Waha North Gialo and NC-98 Oil Treatment Project (Libya) at SNC Lavalin. Led quality management system and training development for the machinery team.

  • Performed pressure vessel design (using AutoCAD) and stress calculations on the BP / Sonatrach In-Salah FEED Project (Algeria), and hydraulic designs for plant cooling seawater piping on Statoil Kårstø Expansion Project (Norway). Coordinated technical and costing studies for the design of LNG unloading pipelines and tank construction on the Qatar Gas II LNG Import FEED Project (U.K.) before specializing in rotating equipment.
  • Developed, reviewed and managed technical specifications, datasheets, enquiry requisitions, supplier bids and technical evaluation of suppliers for pumps, mechanical seals, and centrifugal compressors on Segas Damietta LNG Project (Egypt) and Shell Pearl Gas-To-Liquids Project (Qatar). This included coordinating a mechanical seal barrier fluid system study and HAZOPs. On In-Salah project executed handover of supplier engineering data on furnaces, compressors and turbines and reviewed IOMs (Installation, Operations and Maintenance Manuals) for plant commissioning (using MS Access).
